Areca Hardware RAID 8 Channel Controller

  The Areca 12G SAS interface supports both SAS disk drives (6G or 12G) for data-intensive applications and Serial ATA (SATAIII) drives for low-cost bulk storage of reference data. The ARC-1226-8x supports directly attaching 8 drives via 2 external SFF-8644 connectors. Each port on the SAS controllers supports 4 SAS and⁄or SATA devices. This 12Gb/sec card has a RAID-on Chip 1.2 Ghz processor and 1GB onboard DDR3-1600 SDRAM cache. Works with SAS drives but DOES NOT offer SAS expander support.

Performance

   This 8 Lane PCIe Revision 3 card has the bandwidth for 1500+ MB/sec RAID arrays. This card is designed to run over a pair of 8644 MiniSAS external data cables connecting up to 8 hard drives.

MRAID Management Utility

   Included with the controller card is Areca's world class - Enterprise Class MRAID Management Utllity. Fully functioned, years of maturity. It can handle all the tasks required for server or workstation RAID reliability, expansion and maintenance.

Personal observations: The 1226x is an Enterprise class RAID controller. It can run a high end video, photo or general data storage RAID array. The quality is superb, the support comes either from MacGurus or Areca technicians, and the cards are fast enough to light your hair on fire. I recommend it as the perfect long term high security/reliability choice for an 4 to 8 drive Enterprise RAID array.   ~Rick
